A Musical Adventure
By Don Alias and Gene Perla

Website in Progress

Excerpt by John Abercrombie

What I remember most about Don was the great camaraderie and hangs we would have on the gigs. "Come with me, man, come with me." I think he just had such great joy.  He seemed so relaxed and comfortable with himself in his own skin.  I always felt younger.  I was only about four years younger. He exuded confidence, but in a very gentle way.  But he made you be serious when you were playing.  He was a very serious musician, but when he was away from the congas, it was party time.  As far as the music, you know you had to play or get out because it was real.

Excerpt by Jack DeJohnette

I heard Don play percussion and was impressed with his ability to switch back and forth, and how loose he was on the drum set. He was one of the few conga players who could transfer jazz to the congas. The thing we had in common was being able to play the groove and know how to leave space. We never had a conflict.

Excerpt by Jerry Bergonzi

About Don, it's not like he peaked. His whole life he was playing with these people, those people, these people, those people, growing and growing and growing. Man, what a force.
